What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is carefully placed into your jawbone, acting as an artificial root for your new tooth. Over time, the implant will gradually fuse with your jawbone, providing a stable, long-lasting foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture.

For a single tooth implant, the replacement crown can be matched perfectly to your natural teeth. If you’re having multiple dental implants or full-arch restorations, the crowns can be customised in shape and shade for a brighter, more confident smile. Dental implants can help you eat, speak, and smile your best, however that might look.

Types of dental implants offered by Dr Uzman

Single Dental Implants
We’ll carefully insert a small titanium post into your jaw to replace your tooth. After a period of up to nine months, the bone will have healed and we can fit your new crown.
All-on-4 Implants
Dr Uzman offers two types of full-mouth implants, All-on-4 and All-on 6 (you might have also heard them called Smile in a Day or Teeth in a Day). We’ll insert four dental implants in one or both jaws to replace most or all of your teeth.
All-on-6 Implants
Like all-on-4, all-on-6 implants are designed to replace most or all teeth in your upper or lower jaw. For added stability, Dr Uzman will add 6 implants, rather than 4.
Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are useful for replacing several teeth in a row. They are similar to traditional dental bridges, but rest on dental implants rather than natural teeth.

Why choose dental implants?

Dental implants can transform your smile and confidence, helping you eat, speak, and smile without worry. They provide a long-lasting, natural-looking solution that restores both appearance and functionality, so that you can eat, speak and smile with complete confidence.

The dental implant procedure

1

Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr Uzman will conduct a full dental examination and use the latest digital imaging techniques to create a detailed map of your smile. You’ll discuss your goals and explore all available options, helping you decide which dental implants are right for you. Your consultation with Dr Uzman ensures you understand exactly what dental implants are, and how the dental implant process works, so you can feel confident about your treatment choices.

2

Treatment Planning

If you wish to go forward with the procedure, Dr Uzman will create a personalised treatment plan, outlining the timeline, costs, and any necessary preparatory work. You’ll learn about the types of implants available, whether it’s a single-tooth implant or full mouth dental implants, and you’ll get to see a digital preview of your new smile.

3

Implant Surgery

The dental implant surgery involves carefully placing titanium posts into your jawbone to act as stable, artificial roots. This will be under sedation or local anaesthetic, for your comfort. Sometimes, the jawbone requires a little additional support for dental implants. If this is the case, Dr Uzman may recommend a bone graft to help form the foundations for a smile that is both bright and functional.

4

Crown, Bridge or Denture Placement

After the bone around your implant has fully healed, Dr Uzman will fit your custom crown, bridge, or denture. Whether it’s a single-tooth implant, All-on-4 implants, or a complete mouth of dental implants, your new teeth are designed to look and feel like natural teeth.

Are dental implants right for you?

Ultimately, the only way you will know if dental implants are right for you is to have a consultation with an implant dentist. At your initial appointment, we will assess your situation and help you decide on a treatment plan.

While adults of any age can get implants, they are generally not recommended if your adult teeth have not finished erupting. For most people, this usually happens between ages 18 and 23.

Dr Uzman strongly recommends that you give up smoking or tobacco products before getting dental implants. Smoking can restrict blood flow to the gums, increasing the risk of infection and slowing down the healing process.

Health conditions such as diabetes can sometimes affect whether you are suitable for tooth implants (although they don’t necessarily rule them out). If you have had radiotherapy to your jawbone, this can also affect bone density. For patients with lower bone density who have lost several teeth, it is often possible to fit All-on-4 implants.

If you have gum disease, we can help you treat it before your dental implant procedure. However, it’s important that you maintain good oral hygiene; looked after well, your implants can last for 20-30 years or longer.

Frequently asked questions about dental implants

My dentist said I have no bone. Can I still have implants?
It’s often still possible to have implants even if you don’t have enough bone, if this can be taken from elsewhere and grafted into the area where the implants will be placed. However, the only way to know if you can have dental implants is to have a consultation with a trained implant dentist.

Yes – Dr Uzman is pleased to offer ceramic ‘no-metal’ implants from £2000.

Unfortunately, the NHS usually only offers implants in special circumstances, such as tooth loss due to cancer, trauma, or genetic conditions such as cleft palate.
Some premium or advanced dental insurance plans do cover implants, but you will need to check this with your provider, as many plans class them as cosmetic or elective.
Teeth work in pairs and if you lose a tooth, it may create problems with the tooth directly above or below it. Additionally, the teeth around the gap become misaligned or move position in the long term. Gaps in your smile can also put you at additional risk of tooth decay or gum inflammation as plaque and tartar can build up around the gap.
A dental implantologist is a highly trained dentist, specialising in placing, restoring and maintaining dental implants using cutting-edge techniques. Typically, dental implantologists are involved in every stage of your treatment. They will often collaborate with other medical and dental specialists to create a detailed care plan.
As dental implants are placed under local anaesthetic, having them fitted shouldn’t be painful. You may feel some slight soreness for the first 24-48 hours, but this can usually be treated with over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. However, if the pain continues or worsens after a few days, please contact us again.
If you have just had an implant, Dr Uzman will provide you with instructions on how to care for the site for the first few days. He also suggests taking over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol to relieve any discomfort. If possible, try to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few days after the implant, and avoid hard, very hot or very cold food for the first few days.
With a good oral hygiene routine, dental implants can last for decades. However, it is important that you look after them in the same way as your other teeth, with flossing, brushing and regular checkups, and avoiding tobacco products, sugary or fizzy drinks.
